Do they really need you?

Do they really need you?

There are two types of courses.
– The ones with no input. They are self paced in some manner, you get access to the content, the videos, and you get to do the course on your own.
– The ones with input. You get some sort of input from the person who wrote the course (or another facilitator) through the course. That might be group calls, one on one coaching, a support group etc, but you get to interact with them and input from them in some way.

There’s a difference in price. The courses with more input cost more money (which makes sense, they are more expensive to run!)

People often sell both. I’m sure you’ve seen it. You land on their sales page, and you can buy the cheaper version without them, or the more expensive version with access to them.
Sometimes there is no option, you just buy the one on offer.

So the question is, if they are selling both, does it matter which one you buy?

And the answer is, it depends (as always).
It depends on the person you are selling to, it depends on the subject matter and it depends on the outcome.

The Person.
Some people are driven and motivated, and others need a push and a deadline. I’m the second kind of person. If I don’t have a deadline, it will sit on my to-do list for months. Some people are great, but lots aren’t, lots need help and support. Lots of your students will fall into the second group as well, your student may need help on the way, deadlines, timelines and a structure.

The Subject.
If they need your input will depend highly on subject matter. If you have a 5 weeks to better cooking course, they may not need you at all. As long as you have clear videos, step by step recipes and a guide, they should be ok without you.
However, if you are writing a course on something deeper, eating disorders or mental concerns, then they will need you. There is no way that you can cover all of the variables in content alone. To help them get the changes in their life that you want them to achieve, they will need help and support. They need you.

The Outcome.
The question here is, will they get the most from the course?
Honestly, if you know that they can do it without you, if you know that the content will take them step by step through what they need to learn, then you can sell it without you.
But, if you know that they won’t get the outcomes they want without help… if you know that they will need support to get the changes they want, then sell it with you.

You want them to get great outcomes. If they buy it, but never complete if, or get results, that’s not great for you. If they don’t get to the end and get results then they won’t shout your names from the rooftops.

And honestly, if you know that they won’t get the results they want without support – then don’t sell it without you. If you know your subject matter isn’t just content they can learn, but something that they need help with to get long term changes – then don’t sell it without you.

What do you think? Does your course include input and support?
